On 6 May 1948, the Slovene Democratic Union for the free Territory of Trieste sends a letter of encouragement to the former British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, President of the Congress of Europe in The Hague.

Document extract Letter from Slovenian activists to Winston Churchill (6 May 1948) Slovanska Demokratska Zveva May 6, 1948 To the Chairman of the Congress on the United Europe Movement The Hague The Slovene Democratic Union for the free Territory of Trieste, as the representative of all democratic non-Communist Slovenes, Croats and Serbs in the Free Territory of Trieste and in the European South in general is greeting with deep and sincere enthusiasm the indefatigable work of the International Committee for creation of the United States of Europe and the work of its self-sacrificing representatives. We are convinced that a lasting world peace and a better future of the mankind on the principles of liberty and democracy is guaranteed only through the United States of Europe. Therefore we wish to your Congress, in the name of democratic Non-Communist Slovenes, Croats and Serbs inside as well as outside the confines of the Free Territory of Trieste, a full access and quick realization of its strivings which are also our and the strivings of all Europeans of good will. Hoping that also the Free Territory of Trieste as a self-governing state created to the general benefit of Europe and peace will find its place in the European Federation, we are always ready to contribute utmostly to its realizati (...)
